Usually I don't talk and introduce such topics here, but I want people to know what has been happening in Japan after the earthquake and tsunami in Fukushima.
I guess you hardly hear about it recently. Of course it's not only Japanese media wants to control it, but other countries who support & use nuclear power don't want to tell the negative things about nuclear systems, the defect and what can cause for our lives .
Here is what I found on the Internet. These may be deleted soon.
I hope many people watch these and realize what's going on in Japan now. It's not only Japanese problem, but it's also of the people all of the world.

Visiting Museum : "My Winnipeg" at La Maison Rouge

I visited La Maison Rouge to see exhibition "My Winnipeg".
"Winnipeg" is a city in Canada, and the exhibition tells the maze of the city's past and now through photographs, videos, installations, paintings... According to the art works, Winnipeg often has heavy snow days, and it seems there are so many inhabitants and wild animals. I didn't know anything about the city before, but I thought there must have happened a unforgettable crime which inspired artists.

After I left the museum, I felt like I saw a scared movie....
Especially I was impressed by the doll house installation. 　It depicted very details.
The exhibition has been held by September 25th.

You are all stupid.

Therefore, we tell you that nuclear power is an environmentally friendly form of energy.
Even though a safe repository for high-level radioactive waste has yet to be found.

Therefore, we assure you that nuclear power plants operate reliably.
Even if half the reactors in Germany have just been shut down due to safety concerns.

Therefore, we preach parsimony and assert that nuclear power is very economical.
Even if we currently reap billions of subsidies that are paid for by your taxes.

I've been struggling to make my art recently. After the 311 (The big earthquake, tsunami and Fukushima nuclear stations' accident), everything changed.Especially my point of view and the values had been changed by it. I think this is because I'm a Japanese, though I don't live in Japan. It has a significant impact on my creative work.
The reality and journalism has stronger power to tell what things are happening.
So after 311, I haven't been able to create photographs as art. Instead of photography, I often paint.
I know art can make people feel good, think, and refresh. I have to convince myself more and more.

I still can't believe this happened in east of Japan on Friday. My family live near Tokyo, and they are fine. I have relatives in Akita, and I hope they are ok.
I sent e-mails to some friends of mine, and they could go home safe by 2 or 3 hours walk.
One of models whom I worked with for my series "re:birth" is from Fukushima, where damaged a lot and there is the nuclear power station which blasted. According to her update, she, her family and her neighbors are safe, though her house was damaged a lot.
There are still a lot of aftershocks, and sometimes they are big quakes. So people in east of Japan are still tense.
South Korea, the USA, England, France,Germany, Switzerland, New Zealand, Singapore, China, a lot of countries have sent rescue teams to Japan. I appreciate their help.
Since I'm in France right now, what I can do is only donation. I will donate my sales of photo book "re:birth" to rebuild damaged places.
The biggest problem right now is radiation from Fukushima nuclear plants. But many Japanese are calm, though they must worry a lot. 　 Victims and other Japanese are tied, and support each other.

As a Japanese, I feel really sad and depressed. But I believe Japan will be able to overcome the difficulties, and Japan will rebirth!!

Best Picture The King's Speech : I can't get it. It was ok movie, but I don't want to watch it again. Not remarkable movie to me.

Best Director Tom Hooper for The King's Speech

Best Actor Colin Firth for The King's Speech : He was good. He sounded like a real stammerer.

Best Actress Natalie Portman for Black Swan : She lost her weight for her role and practiced ballet and danced with real dancers. So I can understand she won. Plus she is pregnant. Good for her baby.

Best Supporting Actor Christian Bale for The Fighter : I watched it for about 45 mins, but I couldn't tolerate watching it. It's just not my cup of tea. So I can't say anything about the award's result.

Best Animated Feature Toy Story 3 : I love "Toy Story", of course it won!!

I visited La Maison Rouge to see the exposition, "We are all cannibals" curated Jeanette Zwingenberger.
There were many kinds of art work related "cannibalism" , and many contemporary works were created by young artists, such as Makoto Aida, Gilles Barbier, Michaël Borremans, Patty Chang, Jake & Dinos Chapman, Will Cotton, Wim Delvoye, Erik Dietman, Marcel Dzama, James Ensor, Renato Garza Cervera, Francisco de Goya, JJ Grandville, Sandra Vasquez of Horra, Melissa Ichiuji, John Isaacs, Oda Jaune, Michel Journiac Fernand Khnopff, Frédérique Loutz, Saverio Lucariello, Alberto Martini, Patrizio Di Massimo, Vik Muniz, Wangechi Mutu Álvaro Oyarzún, Chantalpetit, Giov.Battista Podesta, Odilon Redon, Felicien Rops, Bettina Rheims, Toshio Saeki, Joel-Peter Witkin, Ralf Ziervogel, Jérôme Zonder.
Some of works looked disgusting or shocking. I had the similar feeling to the exposition, When I watched movie "Hannibal" and "Seven" . It's enjoyable.

Les Arts Décoratifs / Les Années 1990&2000 / Michel Batory

I visited Les Art Décoratifs (Decoration Art museum?) in Paris. The purpose was to see Les Années 1990&2000 Histore Idéale de la MODE. They show many famous brand costumes, such as Dior, Lanvin, Chanel, McQueen, Lacroix,Yoji Yamamoto, COMME des GARÇONS, Issey Miyake etc. Since I've work for Fashion Week, the exposition was a part of my research. Although the exposition shows costumes for two decades, many of them look fresh and Unique. Fashion trend repeats, and it's rare to find out something new. The exposition also exhibits a lot of jewelry as well.
The museum also shows a selection of posters retrace Michel Batory, who is a Polish graphics designer / artist. His art work is direct reflection of his cerebral and imaginary universe. Many of his works were poetic, pop and created by Photoshop.
The museum shows decorations related animal as well.
If you are in Paris, why don't you visit there?
Les Années 1990&2000 Histore Idéale de la MODE has been held until May 8th (except sunday and monday)
Michel Batory expo is until April 30th, and Animal decoration expo is until November.

Movie about art

If you ever thought "what is contemporary art?" or "what is this?! how come it can be so expensive?!", this movie is for you. The title is " (untitled)". The title of movie itself sounds unique, doesn't it?
If I try to describe this movie by just one word, I say it's "weird". However it depicts something blurred, though it made fun of people in contemporary art and itself. This movie must make you think about "value of things".
Personally I enjoy seeing contemporary works, though I can't appreciate them every time. The scene which art collector has so many weird art works at his place was interesting part, and he looks very serious collecting such works . It reminds me the feeling when I visited New Museum in NY. And also, when I visited some galleries in Chelsea, I actually saw sort of exhibitions which the movie showed.
The movie describe contemporary art ironically.

Review of my exhibition in Paris

It's little late to say "Happy New Year", though it's correct timing for Chinese.
I had spent the new year in Japan. I like spending a new year in Japan, since we can have good traditional Japanese food, longer holidays, visiting a shrine, big winter sale, and other fun things. Also, while I had been there, the winter in Tokyo area wasn't cold at all. That was + point as well.
Anyway, Happy New Year!!

I haven't reported my past exhibition in Paris.
The gallery could sell some photographs, so as a result, the exhibition was successful.

the Exhibition "BLACKOUT" in Palais Royal , Paris

I stopped by the exhibition "BLACKOUT" at Palais Royal. It was only 2 days exhibition, and used a short passage connected to a metro station. They exhibited many kind of art work, such as paintings, photography, fashion, installations and so on. Many of them were used the color Black & white. I saw some good taste works, but I couldn't get the concept of the exhibition.
The good point is French government helps artists enough and provides many public spaces. There are too many art events to catch up with everything. Anyway no wonder there are a lot of artists in Paris.
I recommend that you come to Paris from the middle of October to the end of November, if you enjoy art events in Paris.
FYI, this November is a month of photography : there are many photo exhibitions everywhere. My photo exhibition is one of them. I will inform it soon.

Street Art = Graffiti

Finally I could watch the documentary "Exit Through the Gift Shop". It's a story about graffiti artists and an eccentric man who was obsessed with recording video.
When I finished watching the movie, I simply believed what the movie showed. However, I thought about it deeper and deeper, I've started doubting like other people who watched it felt whether it was a hoax by a famous British graffiti artist, Banksy. Banksy likes playing jokes. He must have made fun of art industry people using an actor (= Mr. Brainwash / Thierry Guetta).
Mr. Brainwash seems a uncanny. He has been still working as a graffiti artist and he had still an exhibition in NY in this year. His art works are expensive $$$. He never answers seriously and honestly, so the truth is still veiled in mystery.
After all, in my opinion, no one knows what real art is, and art is priceless.

Grand Marché d'Art Contemporain de la Bastille

I visited Grand Marché d'Art Contemporain tonight, since my friend shows her art works.
There are many kind of art work, and I actually enjoyed a lot. Some artists' works were really unique, and I hadn't seen similar styles. And also many works are affordable, and good for gifts. My friend exhibited nice works with her friends. Her booth exhibited only etchings with different type of work.
I felt how important the way to exhibit. It seemed some of booths didn't care that, even though art works themselves were good.
Anyway this fair is worthy to visit! I may go there again:-)

Art Fairs reports - fiac! at Grand Palais / Salon Art shopping at Carrouusel du Louvre / access & Paradox at vieille Tample

Yesterday I visited fiac, which was the biggest art fair in Paris. (Because I went there as a press, so I took some images at fiac, and you can see some of them.)
fiac has two locations, the main show was held at Grand Palais, and the other was held at Cour Carreé du LOUVRE.
There were a lot of conceptual work, such as monuments, installations, works includes drawing, painting and photography.
In my opinion, I prefered works at Cour Carreé du LOUVRE because there were more works which seemed easy to go with my house. I'm sorry to say that, but I felt some works were hideous and I couldn't appreciate at Grand Palais. Of course I saw awesome works there.
Anyway, for your investment, I think other art fairs were better and affordable to buy art because a lot of galleries at other fairs tended to show emerging artists works. That means some art works will be very famous and popular later. You never know.
On the other hand, most of galleries at fiac(at Grand Palais) exhibited established artists' works, so most of works are already expensive. But if you can find a masterpiece for you, I'm sure you don't need to care how much you pay. So if you are very rich, fiac (at Grand Palais) fits you.
It was a kind of museum for me, I mean I enjoyed seeing the newest contemporary art.
Speaking of Japanese artists, there were (of course?) Takashi Murakami, and Daido Moriyama, Shoji Ueda, and Hiromix's works. I didn't check details of all works there because there were too many people.
Anyway, fiac is the biggest art fair, and if you like contemporary art, you should definitely go to fiac.

Salon art shopping

I visited Salon art shopping today. Most of exhibitors were artists themselves, not many galleries took part in it.
Honestly I felt the half of works there were similar or forgettable. Still, I saw nice and unique works off course. For instance, it was a painting about the USA flag, with the word "thank you". The half of the flag was sinking into black water waves. But the word "h" was covered by cross mark, so it says "tank you". It was ironic, but funny. Also, some abstract portraits were unique, and a giraffe drawing with sumi (Chinese ink) was really nice.I was considering to buy it (after all I spent the money for LANVIN clothes & shoes...)

access & Paradox

The art fair is free to public. The place is pretty small, but hey you know it's free. There were many young artists' paintings and drawings. Because artists are not established, so if you buy something now, who knows? You may make a lot of money later. Better than wasting money to stocks. Not just for your investment, they could be your room's decorations. Most of participants were galleries.
The fair ends tomorrow, so if you go to Marais area, why don't you stop by?

I visited Art Élysées to see my painter friend's work and other work today.
There were 2 big tents, and looked like the one exhibited contemporary works mainly, the other displayed works about from 50's to 90's and famous artists' works a lot.
There were many photographs works and works using photographs, and paintings / drawings.
They show more 2D art than CHIC Art Fair.
Some same works were sold a lot, and I saw many red marks today. Hopefully the art industry crisis is getting better.

Now is the biggest art season for Paris! There are a lot of Art Fairs in Paris on this week.
Today I visited CHIC ART FAIR, which was the first time to be held. (My representative gallery takes part in it, though they don't show my photography this time because of the timing.)
I found many of them were contemporary and conceptual works. And speaking of photography and painting, I thought there were many architectural works at the fair.
I will go to FIAC and ART ELYSEES as well.

The Photography of Iku Kagayama

Japanese photographer and artist Iku Kagayama is a real find ; a well trained photographer who is also a talent. Iku Kagayama body of work includes images of Raining days , Sundays at the Beach and Still lives. Kagayama's technical ability is superb and every image is a lesson in lighting. Kagayama's control of her camera ( shutter and aperture ) allows for a lighting sensibility that is usually associated with film not digital photography.

Kagayama is old school and chooses heart warming subject matter for her work "Rain, Rain, Rain" ( published in 2009 ) is a series of images that capture the depth and beauty of cloudy days and rain showers ; they are simply captiviting.

Sunday Beaches, it's an other series; Which shows whimsical images of a beach front on a Sunday . The images of an empty boardwalk, beach front , and people enjoying themselves in solitude bring to life the familiar feeling of loneliness associated with Sunday mornings and afternoons ( an experience which most if not all of us have had ) . An other stand out in Kageyama's body of work are her still lives ; which breath fresh air in what other wise would be a familiar subject.

As Kageyama's artist statement puts it "See things by eyes inside of your heart".Kaygeyama has two publications both published in 2009 by Blurb USA; " Rain, Rain , Rain " and "Who Am I" .her gallery apperances include 2009 Paris, France Atelier Mo@La Fonderie 2008 Washington, DC , USA The National Cherry Blossom Festival 2010 Virginia , USA Gallery Kelly's in Alexandria.

★Happy New Year 2010★

It is already January 12th, and I feel time flies very fast.

I couldn't have used my Internet for one and a half month here in France because I changed the plan of my provider which includes Internet, phone and TV from just Internet and I have to wait the construction.

Actually I was very surprised and felt stress the result how long it took to change just a plan, even it was among same company.

I think mostly French service is really bad and very slow.

Anyway, I can use Internet normally, and I can also watch more than 200 channels included English speaking channels, so I feel like I came back from ancient period life style.

It seems this cold wether continues whole this winter, so please stay warm.

I hope new year 2010 will be better than last year, especially economic and enviromental aspects.

Paris Photo

Now Annual photo event "Paris Photo 2009" has been held at Le Carrousel du Louvre.

About 102 galleries (and photo book stores), and 25 art magazine publishers all of the world take part in it this year.

I went there friday night, and there were so many visitors that I couldn't take time to see each photographs unhurriedly. I guess more than 30% of photographs were historical prints, 20% were cinematic scenes or celebrities portraits, and about 50% were contemporary photographs.

I really felt galleries in NY have awesome collections, and German and Japanese galleries have unique points of view. Moreover, Young emerging photographers' works which were selected by SFR contest for Paris Photo were sold a lot, such as famous photographers' works (Of course price is totally different).

I really appreciate "Paris Photo" and enjoy it. In addition, I found a print which I wanted to buy, but it costs more than $80,000...

Upcoming Photo Exhibition in September in France

Canon 7D camera will come out in October

You know what?! In October Canon will release new camera "7D".
If you have problems when you want to take images as many as you can within 1 second with your 5D mark 2, "7D" is definitely ideal camera.
If you often take sports shots or cat walk shots of fashion shows, 7D will be able to capture any moments. 7D can take 8 images per 1 second! It doesn't have only high shatter feature, but it also has 18million pixels! Moreover, 7D is cheaper than 5D mark2, it will cost around less than 2 thousands dollars!
Actually, I am not so interested in 7D, since I have been satisfied with 5D mark2(compared to my former camera 1D mark2, 5D mark2 is pretty good!).

I had been very busy while I was in France. I worked for some Japanese magazines and a drama advertisement in France. I didn't only work, but I also went to some countrysides in France. And also, I made many new friends while I had been there.

By the way, I had read an article about our worries. It said there are only 4 worries in our life.

Do you agree with this opinion? I agree with it. All worries are categorized into these four topics approximately.

In Japan, most people can take long New Year Holiday, normaly it starts from Dec. 28th to Jan. 4th. Many people spend the time with their family. And also, most people eat "Osechi" special new year food during the holiday(especially Jan.1st and 2nd). I could eat "Osechi" this year, since I've been in Japan this new year day. I really enjoyed the food and spending time with my family and friends in Japan.

Japanese economy has been in an uproar like American one, and many people have started been suffered with this deep recession & depression.
However, I hope this situation will not be worse in 2009... >_<;

Busy busy days!!

I had been sooo busy and finally I finished everything what I had to do by December 28th.
First of all, I'm in Japan now. I came back here today!
Because I hadn't visited Japan for about 1 year and hadn't met my family for a while, we talked a lot and then when I noticed what time now was, it was already midnight!!
Oh, no! I had to contact my friends and business partners to decide something....

Anyway, let me tell my schedule, just in case.
I'll be in Japan until Jan. 11th and I'll be in France from Jan. 12th to Feb. 3rd.

Canon EOS 50D's quality

According to reviews of Canon EOS 50D, when you use high ISO, you can see too much noise.
I tested the noise problem with EOS 50D. Yes, as many people say that, the noise when you use ISO3200 appeared a lot!! But if you have a good software to reduce noise, it will be OK level. Moreover, I checked the quality when I used ISO100 with RAW data. If you take a portrait, 50D is good camera, however, if you take sky or sea, this camera is not ideal, even if you set your 50D ISO100 and RAW. You can see glare. Compared to Canon EOS kiss x (rebel x) and 50D, kiss x is sometimes better than 50D in some scenes!
And also, you need to download the Camera Raw profile when you use 50D RAW data, if you use Adobe photoshop.

I attended "Portfolio Review" during FOTOWEEK DC on weekend.
It was the first time for me to take part in portfolio review event.
Although, there is no event like a portfolio review in Japan,
I thought it was good opportunity to get direct feedback about portfolios.
Moreover, I could meet a wonderful reviewer and get great feedback!
Besides, I could have good connections through this event.
I really appreciate my reviewer.

As a photographer from outside the United States, making connections from scratch is very difficult. But there are a lot more events and organizations about photography than Japan, and I really like these aspects.
The way of making connections is becoming clear and I have a lot of things which I haven't done yet. >_<

Wow! I got a lot of information there, PDN PhotoPlus.
After I relocated to the United States, I couldn't have gotten information which I needed.
Recently I visited some art & craft shows and I was searching how to exhibit(including papers quality, framing, walls etc..) and promote.
Of course I could find some information on the Internet, but as you know, using the Internet to search something need keywords and you have to rely on search engines.
But the Expo gave me more overwhelming information.
Especially, I could meet new materials, like papers and printing services.
As to Camera,because I sold my Canon EOS 1D mark2 finally, I checked new Canon 50D, 5D mark2, and Sony α900 (I was a Minolta film camera user and I have many Minolta lenses)there.
I saw many Japanese companies there and I recognized Japanese products weren't only cameras and printers, but there were also different products internationally.
I also enjoyed talking to exhibitors and photographers.
Anyway, I was very satisfied to attend this Expo!!

Database software

Recently, I have been looking for a database software, since I have worked for paper works.
I heard File Maker is the most popular database software.
However, while I had searched them, I found other unique softwares, which were already customized(though they are based on File Maker).
I assume I need to consider them more.
Until I get something, I use word and excel.

Speaking of software, color profile problem is the biggest pain in my neck.
sRGB or Adbe RGB or CMYK... Moreover, HDR ??

Few weeks ago, Canon informed they would release the new model of 5D, "5D mark2" in November. Well, Like I wrote before, this is the time for me to get new Digital SLR camera.

By the way, Adobe also releases Photoshop CS4... I got CS3 this March..T_T
I feel Digital cameras and softwares update too fast.
I hope still my Mac and iPod wouldn't become old models...

Speaking of iPhone, Apple released new iPhone too soon after they released the first one. Not only that, they also set the new iPhone prise much cheaper and it's much better features.

I always feel I shouldn't get first models, because they have always something problems and new models come out very soon with better features.

Digital stuff is like fashion world.

IPA AWARDS 2008 !!

I almost slipped my mind about International Photography Award 2008.
I sent just one photograph to this competition because first of all it charged a lot (for me) to take part in.
I didn't care about result at all and I hadn't checked the result, since I thought the organizer would have notified it.
Because I renewed my website and I was making "bio", I wondered how this result of competition was and I came to realize that my photograph was selected as a "Honorable Mention". ^_^/
I'm happy for it, even though I couldn't win higher awards.

Canon EOS 50D !!

Finally, Canon will release a new model EOS Digital camera "EOS 50D".
It seems to be used advanced technology.
The biggest change from former model is the expansion of ISO.
You'll be able to use dark place where you couldn't take good shots without a flash light because it's possible to use by ISO3200!!
Can you believe ISO12800 with reduced noise?
Moreover, it is said Canon will release another new EOS model within this year.
It must be new model of EOS 5D, which I have been waiting for long time.
I have still have EOS 1D Mark2, but I should definitely say good-bye to it.

My feeling for film cameras becomes stronger, whenever new Digital cameras show up.
Fast of all, compared to film camera, digital camera is much more expensive and
if you are professional photographer and in digital environment, you have to update
your digital camera more often than film's era.
Even if you are really fond of your digital camera, if it is enough out-of-date,
you have to leave from it sooner or later.
On the other hand, speaking of film camera, you don't need to get new one in short span, like digital one.
Your enthusiasm for your film camera should be stronger, since you have been with it
for longer time.

I'm a both user and I'm sure I'm going to get 50D or new model of 5D.^^;

Handmade T-shirt

I think summer clothes is easy to make by yourself and you can enjoy it as well.
I made many T-shirts, using my photographs and drawing.

I used my photograph and designed.

I used iron-print and put many light stones and span-calls. Besides, I cut neck little bit. Just cutting neck makes the image different.

It took longer time than other two because I drew this dog's picture. I also sawed with ribbon and put light stones.

I got a new camera!!

I know it's not practical cauz it's no meaning to have it.
However I like it.
Actually, this camera is heavier than the looking and the details look like a real camera.

FoZZtone

I introduce a Japanese band which I had taken many their pictures.
Recently, I miss J-pop live~. When I was in Japan, I often went to live houses and took live photos. I was closed to music definitely.
Anyway, their name is "FoZZtone". They are popular for young people in Shimokita and Shibuya area, I think.
Their music has their own style and catchy.
Their CDs provide from Virgin music.

When I had my exhibition, I put the notebook and many people provided me their e-mail address. I sent them e-mail, but I couldn't send everybody. I tried to send it everyone, however, some mails were returned. I couldn't read some e-mail adds on the notebook. So if someone who came to my exhibition and left your e-mail add but you hadn't received me e-mail, I'm sorry about that. I just wanted to say thank you guys and informed about my online shop URL for people who asked me to buy my prints.

B/C I have been renovating my website. I'm not sure when I will be able to finish it, but you might have already found some difference. I'll attache more images on gallery page soon.
I like making my website by myself, though it's little hassle..

Many people came to my exhibition at Sakura Matsuri.
I was surprised because there were a lot more people than I expected.
If people who came to my exhibition see this blog, I want to say thank you~.
I could express my own Japanese images to many people here in the United States.
I will extend my artistic action more~

I'm thinking whether I should change my website design.
Well, you will see.^^

The day before my exhibition

Finally, tomorrow is Sakura Matsuri, my exhibition.
I have prepared for it for 2 weeks.
I will show 100 photographs tomorrow.
Not only people's photographs, I'll also exhibit landscapes and daily images.
There are 3 parts.
One is about girls in Tokyo. You can see them busy city, Tokyo. I express "busy" in this part.
The second is about women with kimono. This is traditional images about Japanese.
The last is about calm part of Japan. You can see them quiet and calm images of Japan. Many photographs were taken in Kyoto.
Each parts have different taste and I'm sure you can enjoy those photographs of Japan.
Please come by!!

Spring is coming

Although I wanted to go to see Washington memorial with Cherry Blossom today, today's wether is too windy and rainy to do it, so I gave up.
Now I have been creating my new website and also prepearing for my photo exhibition.
I use a laptop and I didn't feel inconvinent so far, however I recognized I will need a desktop.
I have used windows for long time, but I'm thinking to get Apple this time, since Mac can use all softwares not like before. It's better for me to use Mac in foregn countries.
Any way, I had better to return my work.

I inform my exhibition.

I will have my photo exhibition in the biggest Japanese cultural event in the US "The National Cherry Blossom Festival"("Sakura Matsuri") .

The date is April 12th sat and at 12th and Pensilvenia Ave in Washington DC.

If you have a chance to come to DC or if you are interested in Japanese culture, please come!

Not only arts, there are also performances, live, food and so on.
